About the School

Background

The Ethiopian government has prioritized land issues in its growth and transformation agenda. Rapid advancements in land rights, rooted in the constitution, have significantly contributed to national development. As Ethiopia aims to become a middle-income country, the evolving rural-urban landscape is becoming increasingly dynamic. To support this transformation, the government has identified improved access to urban land, infrastructure, and services, integrated housing development, and the promotion of urban-rural links as key development strategies.

To achieve these goals, it is essential to establish a transparent, accountable, sustainable, and effective land administration system. Professionals in land administration are crucial for guiding land policy initiatives and managing economic agglomeration, which boosts productivity in cities and towns, transforming them into hubs of prosperity. Failing to prepare for inevitable urban expansion can lead to serious consequences. Municipalities need accurate land status information to attract investors. Enhancing the land registration system with spatial and attribute data will improve the overall land information system.

The vital need for sustainable land resource utilization can only be achieved through programs that produce well-qualified graduates with the necessary expertise in land administration. A robust land administration system promotes sustainability and serves as a critical tool for decision-making and policy formulation. Therefore, addressing these challenges requires the involvement of relevant professionals and stakeholders who can provide training, education, and conduct research.

In 2013 G.C., Woldia University established the School of Land Administration to focus on education, research, and community engagement and training in land registration, real property valuation, land use and development, land management, Geomatics, Land law, and land dispute resolution mechanisms.  Now, with a team of qualified professional staff and lecturers, the School of Land Administration comprises two departments: Land Administration and Surveying, and Real Property Valuation.  The Land Administration and Surveying department was opened in 2012 and produces competitive and qualified professionals. The Reap Property Valuation Department was opened in 2022. The programs have been managed and run according to the purpose of its establishment
